Welcome to the Lands Between — Don't Panic
Elden Ring is one of the most rewarding open-world RPGs ever made, but it can feel punishing and overwhelming when you first load in. Enemies hit hard, the map is enormous, and the game rarely holds your hand. That's not a bug — it's the design. But with the right foundation, you'll go from helpless to unstoppable faster than you think.

1. Choose the Right Starting Class
Your starting class determines your initial stats and gear — but it doesn't lock you in permanently. That said, choosing wisely makes the early game much smoother.
- Vagabond — Best for beginners. High Vigor and a solid sword make this the most forgiving start.
- Astrologer — Great for players who prefer magic. Strong early spells, but lower health.
- Warrior — Fast and aggressive, but requires better knowledge of dodge timing.
- Prophet — Incantation-focused; rewarding but trickier for newcomers.
Recommendation: Start as a Vagabond if you want melee, or Astrologer if you want to learn magic safely from range.
2. Master the Core Combat Loop
Elden Ring's combat is built around three pillars: positioning, stamina management, and reading enemy attacks. Ignore any one of these and you'll keep dying.
- Never mash attacks — swing when it's safe, not just when you're in range.
- Watch your stamina bar (the green bar). Running out mid-fight leaves you completely exposed.
- Dodge into attacks, not away from them. Rolling through an attack is called "iframing" and is your most powerful defensive tool.
- Use your shield to block smaller enemies, but don't rely on it against bosses — it drains stamina fast.
3. Explore Smart, Not Fast
The open world is a gift. Unlike previous FromSoftware games, Elden Ring lets you go around obstacles that are too hard. If a boss is destroying you, leave. Explore another area, level up, and come back stronger.
Always loot Sites of Grace (the glowing checkpoints) the moment you find them — they unlock fast travel and save your progress.
4. Level Up Efficiently
Spend your Runes (the in-game currency/XP) regularly. Don't hoard them — if you die carrying thousands of Runes, you lose them all unless you retrieve your bloodstain.
| Stat | What It Does | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Vigor | Increases max HP | High — always level this early |
| Endurance | Increases stamina & equip load | Medium |
| Strength / Dex | Scales weapon damage | High — match your weapon |
| Mind | Increases FP (magic resource) | Only if using spells |
5. Essential Early-Game Tips
- Torrent is free and fast — summon your spectral horse early and use it to explore and escape danger.
- Talk to every NPC twice — most give items or open questlines on the second interaction.
- Use Ashes of War — these are special weapon skills that can completely change how a weapon plays.
- Upgrade your weapon — a +3 or +4 weapon beats a brand new unupgraded one almost every time.
- Don't skip Limgrave — the starting region has two optional dungeons that give great early rewards.
Elden Ring rewards patience and curiosity more than raw skill. Take your time, explore every corner, and don't be afraid to look things up. The journey is the point.
