Overview

Larian Studios spent years in Early Access before releasing Baldur's Gate 3 in full, and the final product is nothing short of a landmark achievement in role-playing games. Built on the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset, it offers a massive, branching story that genuinely responds to how you play — not just at the macro level, but in conversations, combat, and even who's standing in your party at any given moment.

Story & Writing

You begin as a prisoner aboard a Mind Flayer nautiloid ship, with a tadpole implanted in your brain that threatens to transform you into one of the game's most terrifying enemies. From that gripping opening, BG3 never lets up. The main narrative spans three sprawling Acts, each with its own tone and stakes.

What separates BG3 from most RPGs is how much the writing trusts you to explore. Companion characters — Shadowheart, Astarion, Gale, Lae'zel, Wyll, and Karlach — are among the most fully realized party members in gaming history. They have opinions, argue with you, grow, and can leave if you mistreat them. Their personal quests are entirely optional but often rival the main story in quality.

Gameplay & Combat

Combat is turn-based and uses D&D 5e mechanics faithfully. You roll dice (visually, if you want), manage action economy, use environmental hazards, and position your party carefully. The system is deep without being impenetrable.

  • 12 base classes, each with multiple subclass options
  • Multiclassing allows for hundreds of unique character builds
  • Environmental interaction — push enemies off ledges, light oil barrels on fire, destroy bridges
  • Stealth and non-combat solutions to many encounters

Difficulty options are generous. Explorer mode makes the game accessible to those who just want the story, while Tactician punishes every mistake. Honor Mode — a single-save permadeath variant — is there for the truly masochistic.

Visuals & Performance

BG3 is gorgeous. Character models are detailed, environments are lush and varied, and cutscenes rival those in big-budget action games. On high-end hardware, it's a showcase. Performance has improved significantly since launch, though very large saves on older HDDs can show loading hiccups.

What Could Be Better

  • Act 3 (set in Baldur's Gate city) feels slightly rushed compared to the earlier acts in terms of pacing.
  • Some quest flags can break if you complete objectives out of order — always save frequently.
  • The camera can be awkward in tight indoor spaces.
